38 North All-Natural Poultry

Just 38 miles North of the Golden Gate Bridge is the city of Petaluma. In the early 1900s it was known as the “world's egg basket” due to its vast production and exporting of premium eggs throughout the country. But soon refrigerated railcars allowed egg ranchers in the South to take over the market with eggs at a significantly lower cost leaving Petaluma as the “land of empty shells”. However, during Petaluma's flourishing years from the 1860s through the 1920s, much was learned in chicken ranching including innovations in chicken health, selective breeding, machine development, and technological advancements that still influences the industry today.

The Petaluma chicken ranches evolved over the years into raising birds strictly for the selling of meat. Several companies grew into poultry powerhouses such as Petaluma Poultry and Fulton Valley Farms. Despite constant urbanization, and escalating land values, these growers continue to raise premium poultry free of antibiotics, hormones or animal byproducts.

Bassian Farms founded the brand 38 North with the goal of producing the finest locally sourced chickens and ducks in California. That means never administered antibiotics, all vegetarian-fed, Halal Certified, and Humane Handling Certified. We only partner with family-owned growers, and produce with slow production line speeds. Purchase some of our poultry and you'll see and taste the quality of old world craftsmanship.
